Performance

Size	21 KB gzipped (18 KB with Brotli), styles included
Dependencies	none
Start-up	about 50 ms to load the script and start 20 players
Tests	132, all passing, in a real browser

Measured on dist/vega-player.min.js in Chromium, November 2026.

Why it stays light

• Nothing downloads until someone presses play (preload="none" by default).
• responsive-src picks the right file for the player’s size, once.
• All players on a page share one stylesheet and the same few listeners.
• The progress bar only redraws while the video plays and is on screen.
• After two minutes paused, the video is unloaded; the last frame stays visible.
• Thumbnails load the first time you hover the player, never before.
